about
Flick is about self-love and learning to love and respect black hair. Without realising, POOKIE grew up not seeing the importance and beauty of her natural hair due to the European beauty standards imposed on us all. This never really dawned on her until she witnessed her friends taking rigorous care of their afros - treating, oiling and picking it periodically. It was like second nature to them and really caused POOKIE to think about her own hair-care routine and her perception of her natural hair all-together. She realised that it was okay to love herself as she was, and more-so, to invest in and nurture herself. To these friends, Flick is dedicated.
Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
